What Vehicles Can I Drive on a Category B Car Licence?
Passing your driving test gives you the freedom to get behind the wheel and start driving independently. But exactly what vehicles can you drive on a car licence?
For most drivers, passing a standard car driving test gives you a Category B driving licence. This allows you to drive more than just an ordinary car, although there are limits relating to the vehicle’s weight, passenger capacity and the type of licence you hold.
At Fast Pass Driving School, we regularly get questions from learners about whether their car licence allows them to drive vans, larger vehicles, minibuses or motorhomes. In this guide, we’ll explain what you can drive with a standard car licence and when you might need additional training and licence categories.
What can I drive with a Category B licence?
A standard Category B car licence allows you to drive vehicles with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of up to 3,500kg, with up to 8 passenger seats in addition to the driver’s seat.
This means your car licence can cover a wide range of vehicles, including:
Cars
Small vans
Some larger vans
Certain motorhomes and campervans
Some pick-up trucks
Cars towing a trailer, subject to the relevant weight limits
The important thing is that the vehicle must fall within the limits of your Category B entitlement.
Can I drive a van on a car licence?
In many cases, yes. If the van has a MAM of no more than 3,500kg, you can generally drive it with a Category B licence.
This is useful if you’re moving house, hiring a van for a weekend or considering driving a van as part of your job.
However, not every van can be driven on a standard car licence. Once the vehicle exceeds the Category B weight limit, you will need the appropriate higher entitlement.
What about automatic and manual vehicles?
The type of car test you pass can also affect what you’re allowed to drive.
If you pass your test in a manual car, you can normally drive both manual and automatic Category B vehicles.
If you pass your test in an automatic car, your licence will normally have an automatic transmission restriction. This means you cannot drive a manual Category B vehicle unless you subsequently pass the appropriate manual driving test. GOV.UK identifies restriction code 78 as meaning that the licence is restricted to vehicles with automatic transmission.
This is why choosing between manual driving lessons and automatic driving lessons is an important decision for new drivers.
If you think you may need to drive both manual and automatic vehicles in the future, learning in a manual vehicle can give you greater flexibility.
Can I drive a 7.5-tonne vehicle on a car licence?
Generally, no.
A vehicle weighing more than 3,500kg falls outside the standard Category B entitlement. For vehicles between 3,500kg and 7,500kg MAM, you normally need a Category C1 licence. Category C1 also allows a trailer of up to 750kg, subject to the relevant rules.
This is where C1 licence training can be useful.
C1 entitlement is commonly associated with vehicles such as:
7.5-tonne lorries
Larger motorhomes
Certain specialist vehicles
Medium-sized goods vehicles
If you are planning to drive a vehicle over 3,500kg, it’s important to check its MAM and your driving licence entitlement before getting behind the wheel.
Do I need a special licence to drive a minibus?
A standard Category B licence does not automatically give every driver unrestricted entitlement to drive a minibus.
For vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a Category D1 entitlement may be required, depending on the circumstances and the restrictions that apply. D1 covers vehicles with no more than 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres and a trailer up to 750kg.
If you need to drive a minibus as part of your work or for an organisation, you may therefore need D1 licence training and the appropriate entitlement.
There can also be restrictions attached to older driving licences, so it’s important to check the categories and restriction codes shown on your licence rather than assuming that a car licence covers every minibus.
What about towing a trailer?
A Category B licence can allow you to tow a trailer, but the rules depend on the maximum authorised mass of both the car and trailer.
For modern Category B licences, GOV.UK states that you can tow a trailer with a MAM of up to 3,500kg, but the combined MAM of the vehicle and trailer must not exceed 7,000kg. There are also specific rules and restrictions that can apply.
Always check your licence entitlement and the weights of the specific vehicle and trailer combination before towing.
Can I drive a motorhome on a car licence?
Some motorhomes can be driven on a standard Category B licence, provided they meet the relevant weight and passenger limits.
If the motorhome has a MAM of no more than 3,500kg, it can generally fall within Category B. Heavier motorhomes may require C1 entitlement.
This is one of the reasons C1 licence training is popular with drivers who want to drive larger motorhomes or campervans.
Can I drive a larger lorry or bus?
A standard car licence does not cover all larger vehicles.
For example:
Category C1: vehicles between 3,500kg and 7,500kg
Category C: vehicles over 3,500kg, subject to the category requirements
Category D1: minibuses with up to 16 passenger seats and a maximum length of 8 metres
Category D: larger buses with more than 8 passenger seats
Additional provisional entitlement and a driving test are required to add higher categories to your licence.
What vehicles can I drive after passing my car test?
Here’s a simple overview:
| Vehicle | Standard Category B licence? |
|---|---|
| Standard car | Yes |
| Automatic car | Yes |
| Small van up to 3,500kg MAM | Generally yes |
| Some motorhomes up to 3,500kg MAM | Yes |
| 7.5-tonne lorry | No – C1 required |
| Larger lorry | No – higher category required |
| 16-seat minibus | Usually D1 required |
| Larger bus | No – D required |
| Trailer | Subject to Category B towing rules |
Remember that your individual licence may have additional restriction codes or entitlements. GOV.UK recommends checking your driving licence to confirm which vehicles you are currently entitled to drive.

I genuinely cannot recommend Andras enough!! 😭👏 After all the stress, nerves and worrying about my driving test, Andras somehow managed to get me through it and I PASSED FIRST TIME!!! 🥹🚗💨 He is honestly such an amazing instructor. He was so patient, reassuring and encouraging, even when I was convinced I was going to completely mess everything up 😂. He explained everything so clearly, never made me feel stupid for asking questions, and always knew exactly what I needed to work on. There were definitely moments where I thought, “There is absolutely NO way I’m passing this test” 😭 — but Andras had more faith in me than I had in myself. He pushed me when I needed pushing, calmed me down when I was stressing, and prepared me so well for the actual test. And then… FIRST TIME PASS!!! 🥳🥳🥳 I honestly don’t think I could have done it without him. What can I say!! 5 stars just aren’t enough, 100 would be more accurate! I learned to drive with Andras, who is in my humble opinion the best driving instructor the world has to offer. He is so patient, understanding and supportive, he was firm when he needed to be, but in the best possible way! He quite honestly brings the best out in you! He sees your potential and nurtures it until you are ready believe in yourself! My driving journey wasn’t easy for me, I started with incredibly bad nerves, other driving instructors had shot my confidence into ground, I was terrified of roundabouts and I had such a negative outlook when I first started! But with Andras, we learned together, we adapted the lessons so that I felt as comfortable as I ever could…and today, on my birthday, I passed my driving test!! I can’t thank Andras with fast pass enough!!! I have a freedom now I never thought I’d have!! I cannot recommend Andras enough! As someone who has struggled finding a driving instructor non of them seemed to work for me. Just after one lesson i was so much more confident and comfortable driving because of how welcoming he is, I don’t think we stopped laughing I managed to pass first time with three minors which is something that felt absolutely impossible just a month ago I cannot recommend enough!Posted on Facebook Megan EllisonrecommendsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Facebook. I can’t recommend Michelle highly enough. I was a very anxious driver, and she completely transformed my confidence. I passed my test on the second attempt with only 4 minors — my first test I actually had just 2 minors but failed because my nerves got the better of me. Michelle supported me through that setback and helped me come back stronger. She’s an excellent teacher who really pushes you to learn, but always in a way that feels supportive and encouraging. Her understanding of driving is incredible, and she tailored her teaching style to suit me personally, which made such a difference. She’s calm, patient, and has a great personality that makes lessons enjoyable and stress-free. I can’t recommend Michelle enough. Excellent teacher.
