ADI Process

The Steps To Become A Driving Instructor

Driving Instructor Training

We’ll guide you through every stage of the ADI process, including the eligibility requirements, DVSA registration, Part 1 theory test, Part 2 driving ability test, and Part 3 instructional ability assessment. You’ll also learn about trainee licences, training options, and how long the process typically takes, helping you understand exactly what’s involved in starting your journey towards becoming a successful driving instructor.

Step 1 – Check You Meet the Requirements

Before starting your ADI training, you must meet the DVSA eligibility requirements.

You generally need to:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Have held a full UK or EU driving licence for at least 3 out of the last 4 years
  • Have no driving bans within the last 4 years
  • Pass a criminal record check (DBS check)

The DVSA also reviews your driving record and overall suitability before accepting your application.

Step 2 – Apply to Start the ADI Process

Once eligible, you’ll apply to begin the qualification process with the DVSA. This includes:

  • Completing the ADI application
  • Obtaining a DBS disclosure number
  • Registering for the qualifying exams

At Fast Pass Driving School, we guide trainees through the paperwork and help make the application process simple and stress-free.

Step 3 – Pass ADI Part 1: Theory Test

The first official test is the ADI Part 1 Theory and Hazard Perception Test.

This exam assesses:

  • Road safety knowledge
  • The Highway Code
  • Driving techniques
  • Instructional knowledge
  • Hazard perception skills

The test is computer-based and designed to ensure trainee instructors have advanced theory knowledge beyond standard learner driver level.

Step 4 – Pass ADI Part 2: Driving Ability Test

The ADI Part 2 test is an advanced practical driving assessment.

During this stage, an examiner evaluates:

  • Vehicle control
  • Observation and anticipation
  • Hazard awareness
  • Eco-safe driving
  • Overall driving standard

This test is much more demanding than a normal driving test and requires a very high standard of driving throughout.

Step 5 – Pass ADI Part 3: Instructional Ability Test

The final stage is the ADI Part 3 instructional ability test.

This exam assesses your ability to teach learner drivers safely and effectively. You’ll be tested on:

  • Lesson planning
  • Risk management
  • Communication skills
  • Coaching techniques
  • Adapting lessons to individual learners

Modern driver training focuses heavily on coaching methods and helping learners develop independent driving skills.

Earn Money & Train To Become A Driving Instructor At The Same Time

After successfully passing the ADI Part 2 driving ability test, trainee instructors have the option to apply for a DVSA trainee licence, commonly known as a “pink badge.” This licence allows you to start giving paid driving lessons before becoming fully qualified as an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). For many trainees, this is one of the most valuable stages of the qualification process because it provides real-world teaching experience while continuing to prepare for the final Part 3 instructional ability test.

The trainee licence is valid for six months and allows you to work with learner drivers under the supervision of a driving school or qualified instructor trainer. During this time, you’ll develop practical teaching skills, improve your communication and coaching techniques, and gain confidence working with different types of learners. You’ll also begin understanding how to structure lessons, manage risk, and adapt your teaching style to suit individual pupils.

Working as a trainee instructor gives you the opportunity to earn money while completing your ADI training, making the transition into your new career more financially manageable. Many trainee instructors use this period to build experience quickly and prepare themselves for long-term success as a fully qualified driving instructor. At Fast Pass Driving School, we provide ongoing support and guidance throughout your trainee licence period to help you maximise your experience and prepare confidently for the ADI Part 3 test.
